Our policy serves to safeguard the health of our employees and their families, our patients, and the community at large from infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, that may be reduced by vaccinations and create a more certain future.Monday-Friday 8am-5pmSummary: The Optometric Technician supports the Optometrist and medical providers to ensure that all patients receive quality care while maintaining compliance with all federal grants, HIPAA, and Hunter Health Clinic policies and procedures.Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Optometrist in eye examinations and corrective procedures
  • Performs pre-testing such as visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, pupil reflexes, visual field testing, pressure inside the eye and documents results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Assists with eye exercises and vision therapy
  • Prepares referrals, work and/or school excuse letters, written prescriptions for providers to sign and staff consult letters to primary care provider
  • Assists care teams with patient care by rooming, documenting chief complaint, capturing vital signs, collecting patient history, entering medications within the Medication Administration Record in the EHR
  • Performs tests to assist in evaluation and diagnosis including peak flows, nebulizer treatments, pulse-oximetry, 12-lead EKG and Snellen test. Performing capillary blood glucose test, A1C, INR, strep test swabs, TB skin tests (ID injection) and other injections both inter muscular and subcutaneous
  • Enters orders in EHR by verbal and standing orders
  • Adheres to rights of medication administration: right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, and right time when administering medications, whether oral or injectable
  • Enters current and historical childhood and adolescent immunization in Web-IZ and EHR
  • Conducts inventory of supplies and stock examination rooms
  • Monitors biohazard and sharps containers for disposal
  • Updates infection control room manual daily
  • Prepares the exam room for sterile procedures, pap smears and STD tests, etc.
  • Performs septic hand washing before and after rooming patients in exam room and procedures
  • Properly dismisses patient, including education and clean of exam room
  • Assists RN/LPN with notifications and prescription refills
  • Documents patient encounters, phone calls, drug administration, and chart review in EHR
  • Accurately completes all patient care forms
  • Performs autoclave operations
  • Other duties as assignedQualifications:
    • One to three years' experience in Optometry setting preferred
    • Certified or Registered Medical Technician, Medical Assistant and/or Optometry Technician preferred
    • BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers Certified

      • Working Conditions: Works in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually high. Potential exposure to infectious disease is possible.
      • Physical Strength: The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
      • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
