Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspects various types of construction projects that involve
civil, municipal, architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical
and environmental disciplines, both new construction and
renovations to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and
contract specifications.
- Reviews, interprets, and performs checks on all types of
construction drawings, including, but not limited to:
Infrastructure, transportation, subdivision and site
plans.
- Attends pre-bid and pre-construction meetings; responds to
questions and resolves problems; makes recommendations for changes
as necessary to resolve ordinance, code, contract or procedural
violations.
- Completes and maintains daily/weekly inspection reports,
tracks/logs contractor pay item quantities, reviews contractor pay
estimates, schedules and observes testing, conducts final
inspections, prepares written punch lists, responsible for
electronic file management.
- Interpersonal Relationships: Develops and maintains cooperative
and professional relationships with employees, managers, and
representatives from other departments and organizations.
- May investigate and respond to citizen complaints regarding
construction sites or related ordinance violations; in rare
instances may testify in court.
- May provide materials testing (typically nuclear density
testing and/or concrete field testing) in the field on projects as
needed.
- Frequently stands, walks, reaches with hands and arms, stoops,
kneels, crouches or crawls, regularly climbs or balances.
- Frequently lifts up to 25 pounds; occasionally lifts up to 50
pounds; and in rare cases lifts not more than 100 pounds. Able to
carry 25 pounds over rough terrain for 100 yards.
- Work environment frequently is in the outdoors and working in
extreme heat and cold; occasionally inside buildings or other
structures; occasionally working near moving mechanical parts,
occasionally working in high precarious places, around fumes or
airborne particles, toxic or caustic waste, risks electrical
shock/explosives/radiation and vibration. Rarely working in wet
conditions; loud noise may be experienced at times.
- Utilize smartphone, scan/copy machine, computer (tablet or
laptop) and motor vehicles.
- Ability to operate personal computer, including Bluebeam Revu
PDF technology and Microsoft office products, specifically word
processing, spreadsheet, and data base software. Experience in
operating tape measure, measuring wheel and tape, levels, pressure
gauges, testing equipment, engineering calculator, motor vehicle,
and smartphone sufficient to perform job duties.
Qualifications:
- Five or more years of construction inspection experience
preferred.
- KDOT Inspection Experience preferred.
- KDOT CITT and American Concrete Institure (ACI) Certifications
preferred.
- Construction: Knowledge of methods, practices and techniques of
civil construction and commercial development to include project
blueprints and technical schematics. Knowledge of city, state and
federal codes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to civil
construction and commercial development projects. Knowledge of
inspection methods for public works municipal and state DOT
projects.
- Safety: Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions
and safety regulations related to construction sites and uniform
traffic control procedures. Knowledge of equipment inspection
procedures and techniques. Knowledge of common safety rules,
regulations, procedures, and practices.
- Considerable skill in reading and interpreting construction
drawings, plans, specifications and contract documents; skill in
applying material testing procedures.
- Ability to prepare, organize and maintain inspection field and
office data, reports and systems.
- Ability to perform required mathematical computations.
- Ability to effectively interact and communicate complex
technical information, orally and in writing, in a professional
manner to contractors, developers, property owners, employees,
consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City/State
officials, general public, and Project Engineer. May occasionally
deal with dissatisfied individuals.
- Radiation Safety Training.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint,
Word) and PDF. Possess above average mathematical knowledge and
ability to operate handheld calculators, tablets and
computers.
- Experience with word processing, databases, and
spreadsheets.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work 50+ hours per week and weekends when
necessary.
- Applicants must be able and willing to accept out of town
projects, usually within the state of Kansas.
- Must be physically capable of moving about on construction
worksites. Work is performed mostly in field settings.
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree or
higher.
- Current / valid driver's license.
